Many of the street children we work with each day have tried tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, glue, and/or benzene. Glue is the favorite and one of hard to tackle! It causes headaches, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, palpitations, unconsciousness, disturbance and disappointment. Regardless, glue is still a huge draw for these little ones. It is easy to wonder why!
These children have figured out that this drug can suppress hunger, in fact it can suppress emotions full stop. It can effect memories (Some of which they want to forget). It can cause numbness and warmth all with a fun factor of hallucinations thrown in!
Working to stop these children becoming reliant on such a thing is a long, delicate but vital process. Each child that makes a commitment to go home not only has to take big brave steps into reconciliation but into rehabilitation too.
The build up to a child’s commitment to go back home can be a long journey of relapse and re-love. Our team continually seeks opportunities to show them how worth the fight they really are.
